What is an anxiety disorder?
Anxiety is a normal emotion, and we can all get anxious when tackling stressful situations. However, excessive anxiety about everyday situations could indicate that you have an anxiety disorder.
If you suffer from persistent worry or fear, or you experience regular episodes of intense anxiety, an anxiety disorder may be the culprit. Mild anxiety is frustrating, but for the most part, it’s manageable. However, severe anxiety — if left untreated — can hugely impact your daily life. For some, such intense anxiety can derail their social life and relationships with loved ones, and for others, it might hinder their professional or academic advancement. Whatever the impact, it prevents those with the disorder from leading a confident, happy life and performing to the best of their abilities.
An anxiety “disorder” might sound troubling, but it’s far more prevalent than you may realise, affecting millions of people around the world. Fortunately, it’s also something that can be treated.
In some cases, we can treat anxiety without medication, instead recommending lifestyle changes that will help you manage your feelings. If high anxiety levels are preventing you from leading a normal life or you’re continually experiencing anxiety panic attacks, seeking anxiety therapy from a trained health professional could be a decision that will change your life for years, even decades to come.
The exact cause of social phobia is unknown, but research suggests that it can be caused by a combination of environmental factors and genetics. If your close family member has an anxiety condition, you might be more likely to develop anxiety yourself, but negative experiences can also contribute, including bullying, family conflict or abuse.
Often, social anxiety is triggered by certain beliefs we have about ourselves. If you were criticised for not being “good enough” or “confident enough”, or you think this about yourself, you may develop social anxiety as a defense against being judged or failing.
What are the symptoms of an anxiety disorder?
Symptoms of anxiety can differ from person to person, as can their severity. Some people may display just one or two symptoms, while others suffer from more. While anxiety disorder typically affects mental health, it can also manifest in the form of physical symptoms.
The most common signs of anxiety disorder are:
At Clear Meadows Recovery, we get it, and we’re here to help. The CMR approach to diagnosing and treating anxiety disorders
Diagnosing an anxiety disorder comprises of a series of tests to determine the severity of your condition. CMR will suggest a few specialized tests to analyse your symptoms before recommending and executing an effective treatment plan. Your anxiety disorder diagnosis might include the following:
This process helps us work with you to understand the intensity of the condition you are suffering with, prepare a treatment plan and identify the next steps in your journey to recovery — it’s end-to-end treatment you need under one roof.
Your anxiety disorder treatment plan
Following our in-depth assessment and subsequent anxiety disorder diagnosis, you’ll benefit from a personalised and balanced treatment approach that prioritises managing your symptoms and reducing the impact of the disorder and the condition on your life.
To ensure a perfectly tailored treatment plan, we begin with a professional anxiety disorder diagnosis and produce a personalised assessment report.
Our experts will evaluate your needs and create a treatment plan tailored to the specifics and severity of your condition. Treatment for an anxiety disorder can include psychotherapy or medication, and sometimes a combination of the two.
Patients with anxiety disorders need ongoing care and support, which is why we recommend IPD servies at CMR and follow-up appointments for continued anxiety therapy while reviewing your progress.
Medication and psychotherapy for anxiety
After your anxiety disorder diagnosis, one of our trained mental health professionals will design a bespoke treatment plan based on the severity of your condition and its effect on your everyday life. Treatment for anxiety can include:
Psychotherapy
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is the best form of psychotherapy for anxiety disorders, especially Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD). CBT involves speaking to our therapists about your anxiety symptoms and learning to identify what triggers them. We’ll also teach you effective tools and techniques you can use to reduce your anxiety and manage your fear, all while gently guiding you back on a path towards enjoying activities and situations that you previously avoided due to overwhelming anxiety.
Medication
There are many types of anxiety medication available, but many cases, anxiety can be treated without a prescription. After assessing your condition and closely monitoring your progress, your psychiatrist may decide to prescribe medication if they feel you will benefit from it.
Apart from the above treatments, you may also be encouraged to make lifestyle changes to reduce the intensity of your anxiety. These might include:
